Yao Zhenxu honoured at ITTF Annual General Meeting
Held in virtual reality, China’s Yao Zhenxu was named a Personal Honorary Member of the International Table Tennis Federation at the Annual General Meeting held on Monday 28th September.
Most notably in 1971 Yao Zhenxu played a major role in promoting relations between China and the United States in the era of Ping Pong Diplomacy.
Later from 1985 to 1995 he became the Chinese National Team Manager, prior to assuming the role of Chair of the ITTF Technical Committee Chair between 1995 and 2009.
Additionally, he assumed the post of Vice President of the Chinese Table Tennis Association from 1995 to 2014; a period during which he was the Tournament Director at the 1995 World Championships in Tianjin and at the Volkswagen 2005 World Championships in Shanghai.
Currently Yao Zhenxu is actively promoting the ITTF Museum in Shanghai.
Meanwhile, the African city of Durban secured the decision ahead of Düsseldorf to host the 2013 World Championships. Durban gained 90 votes, as opposed the one further contender, the German city of Düsseldorf which secured 39 votes.
It will be only the second occasion since the World Championships were first staged in 1926 in London that Africa has played host; the only other occasion being in 1939 when the Egyptian capital city of Cairo was the destination.
