The South Asia Regional HOPES Week Concluded

The South Asia Regional HOPES week concluded today at Sonepat, (Haryana) India with much excitement and camaraderie.  The organisors had arranged excellent facilities and provided wonderful opportunities to the participants.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The programme organized by Table Tennis Federation of India under the auspices of ATTU and ITTF began on 22nd January, with participation from Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and hosts India. Pakistan had also submitted their nominations, but was unable to participate due to some procedural issues.

The schedule of the event included a 4-day Coaching camp and a 2-Day Tournament at the end. A total of 12 Boys and 10 Girls aged 11-12 years participated in both the coaching camp and competition.  The competition was conducted in the round-robin league system among all participants, and Fathimath Dheema from the MALDIVES emerged as the top player winning all the 9 matches she played. In the process she has written table tennis history in the Maldives by winning the first Gold medal for her country. Among the boys it was Oushik Ghosh from INDIA won the Gold medal.

It was the first time that Bhutan has participated in the HOPES event and according to Tashi Tshering, one of the two participants from Bhutan, “it was a most rewarding and exciting experience”.  

Both the winners, Dheema and Oushik will now participate in the Asian Hopes Challenge in Bangkok in May 2019. 

The Trainer appointed by ITTF for the Programme was Table Tennis Coach from Thailand Mr. Prinya Nonsagate.
