2019 Czech Junior and Cadet Open
Saturday 16th February
Gold for Japan
Underlining the vast depth of talent currently available and seemingly ever deeper amongst teenager and those of more tender years, the no.4 seeds, Japanese trio formed by Honami Nakamori, Yukari Sugasawa and Sakura Yokoi won the junior girls’ team title at the 2019 Czech Junior and Cadet Open in Hodonin on Saturday 16th February.
Furthermore, at no stage of the competition were they ever in serious danger of defeat.
The greatest challenge to their title hopes came at the semi-final stage; a 3-1 win was the margin of victory against the no.2 seeds, the Russian outfit comprising Elizabet Abraamian, Anastasia Kolish and Ekaterina Zironova.
Crowned junior girls’ singles champion two days earlier, Honami Nakamori proved the pivotal player. She beat both Elizabet Abraamian (12-10, 12-10, 11-13, 11-9) and Anastasia Kolish (11-7, 12-10, 7-11, 11-5); the one further Japanese success was recorded in the third match of the contest when Sakura Yokoi accounted for Ekaterina Zironova (11-9, 12-10, 11-4).
A place in the final booked, the good form continued; a 3-0 win in opposition to the top seeds, the Polish trio of Anna Wegrzyn, Katarzyna Wegrzyn and Aleksandra Michalak secured the title.
Honami Nakamori accounted for Anna Wegrzyn to set her team on the road to victory (11-8, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9), before Yukari Sugasawa overcame Katarzyna Wegrzyn (6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7) and Sakura Yokoi beat Aleksandra Michalak to bring matters to a conclusion.
Defeat by three matches to nil, for Anna Wegrzyn, Katarzyna Wegrzyn and Aleksandra Michalak at the semi-final stage it had been the total reverse against the no.7 seeds Singapore. There was no charity spared when facing Goi Rui Xuan, Koh Jia Qi and Zhou Jingyi.
Proceedings in Hodonin conclude on Sunday 17th February with the cadet boys’ singles, cadet girls’ singles, cadet boys’ doubles and cadet girls’ doubles events.
