Dates announced for Asian Olympic Qualification tournament

Scheduled to be staged last year in early April in Bangkok but postponed owing the COVID-19 outbreak, the Asian Qualification Tournament for the Tokyo 2000 Olympic Games will be held in Doha, Qatar from Saturday 13th to Monday 15th March.

Held at the same venue, the tournament will precede the World Olympic Qualification event to be organised from Tuesday 16th to Friday 19th March.

Both tournaments form part of the World Table Tennis Middle East Hub schedule which comprises a WTT Contender event from Wednesday 3rd to Saturday 6th March and a WTT Star Contender tournament from Monday 8th March to Saturday 13th March.

The Asian Table Tennis Union is allocated six men’s singles and six women’s singles places plus one mixed doubles place by continental qualification for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

One male and one female player from each zone within the Asian Table Tennis Union - Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, South East Asia and West Asia – gains qualification. The one remaining place is allocated to the highest ranked player among the first reserves in each regional qualification event. The selection is based on the Olympic Qualification Ranking published in April prior to the Games.  West Asia had already organized its regional qualification in February 2020 with ALKHADRAWI (KSA) and ZAZA Hend (SYR) taken up the respective MS and WS quota.

One mixed doubles pair, the event organised on a knock-out basis, will qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
