Xu Xin most successful in Qatar
Just under one year ago in early March it was not necessarily the best of fortunes for China’s Xu Xin. He departed with a title, he partnered colleague Ma Long to men’s doubles success, however, later in the proceedings there was a somewhat surprise defeat.
At the semi-final stage of the men’s singles event, he was beaten by England’s Liam Pitchford.
Nevertheless, the now 31-year-old is the most successful player ever in the history of an ITTF World Tour tournament in Qatar; moreover, at the forthcoming WTT Contender which starts on Wednesday 3rd March, followed on Monday 8th March by the WTT Star Contender event, he is the most prominent name in both tournaments.
He is the men’s singles top seed, in the men’s doubles his name does not appear but in the mixed he joins forces with Sun Yingsha, the player with whom he won in 2019 in Bremen when beating compatriots Wang Chuqin and Wang Manyu in the final.
The record in Qatar owned by Xu Xin surpasses all others; he has nine titles to his credit, three men’s singles, five men’s doubles and one mixed doubles. The nearest rival is Wang Liqin with three men’s singles titles to his name plus four men’s doubles; he is followed by Ma Long, who owns the most men’s singles golds. He won four times, but only twice did he secure the men’s doubles.
Notably the leading female player is Zhang Yining, she won three women’s singles and four women’s doubles titles.
Also, when reaching a final in Doha, only on one occasion has Xu Xin experienced defeat; in 2010 partnering Wang Liqin, the duo lost to Ma Lin and Wang Hao.
