Dates changed for Asian Tokyo 2020 Qualification Tournament
Staged in the splendid setting of the Ali Bin Hamad Attiya Arena in Doha, the Asian Qualification Tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be staged from Thursday 18th to Saturday 20th March.
Comprising three events – men’s singles, women’s singles, mixed doubles – the draw will take place on Wednesday 17th March.
Six places in each of the men’s and women’s singles event plus one mixed doubles are allocated to Asia by means of a qualification tournament.
In the men’s and women’s singles one player from each of the five regions – Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, South East Asia, West Asia - gains a Tokyo place.
However, the West Asia representatives, Saudi Arabia’s Ali Alkhadrawi and Syria’s Hend Zaza are known; the qualification tournament having been staged last year in February in Amman.
Thus, in Doha, in each of the men’s and women’s singles events, players will compete within the regions for four places; the one remaining place will be awarded to the highest listed player on the April 2021 ITTF Olympic Qualification Ranking list who competed in Doha but did not gain qualification.
The format of the men’s and women’s singles event will be determined by the size of entry, for the mixed doubles, in which all regions are involved, proceedings will be organised on the knock-out principle.
Closing date for entries is Friday 5th February.
In the same venue, the World Olympic Qualification will be staged from Sunday 14th to Wednesday 17th March.
