Mima Ito responds, beats Ding Ning

Somewhat disappointed at the recent Liebherr 2019 World Championships in Budapest, a first round exit; in Shenzhen on Saturday 1st June, at the Seamaster 2019 ITTF World Tour Platinum China Open Japan’s Mima Ito responded.

At the quarter-final stage of the women’s singles event she beat the host nation’s Ding Ning, the top seed, in five games (7-11, 12-10, 18-16, 13-11, 11-9).

Defeat for Ding Ning, three times the world champion, there was also defeat for colleague Liu Shiwen, the no.5 seed and recently crowned world champion. She was beaten defending champion Wang Manyu, the no.4 seed (11-6, 11-4, 6-11, 11-4, 13-11). At the semi-final stage, Mima Ito and Wang Manyu meet. In the opposite half of the draw Chinese colleagues Zhu Yuling and Chen Meng meet.

In the round of the last eight, Zhu Yuling, the no.2 seed, overcame Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching, the no.8 seed (7-11, 14-12, 11-7, 11-4, 11-5); Cheng Meng, the no.3 seed, ended the adventures of Chinese national team colleague, Chen Xingtong, the no.14 seed (11-9, 11-5, 11-3, 11-7).

Meanwhile, in the men’s singles quarter-finals, China’s Ma Long, the no.11 seed beat colleague Fan Zhendong, the top seed (11-4, 8-11, 11-6, 12-10, 13-11); Lin Gaoyuan, the no.3 seed, accounted for Chinese national team colleague, Liang Jingkun, the no.9 seed (11-9, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 6-11, 6-11, 11-7).

Ma Long now meets Tomokazu Harimoto, the no.4 seed; he recorded a quarter-final success again Hong Kong’s Wong Chun Ting, the no.14 seed (11-7, 11-5, 11-3, 10-12, 12-10): Lin Gaoyuan faces Xu Xin. The no.2 seed, in the round of the last eight, he ended the progress of Germany’s Timo Boll, the no.5 seed (11-4, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6).

Defeat for Timo Boll but there was success, partnering Patrick Franziska, the German duo beat China’s Ma Long and Wang Chuqin, the reigning world champions (11-8, 11-7, 11-5) to secure the men’s doubles title. Notably Timo Boll and Patrick Franziaka had been required to compete in the qualification tournament; it had been the same for Gu Yuting and Liu Shiwen. They secured the women’s singles title beating colleagues and top seeds, Wang Manyu and Zhu Yuling (11-7, 12-10, 11-9) in the final.

Silver for the favourites, in the mixed doubles final it was no different. Winners earlier in the year at the Seamaster 2019 ITTF Challenge Oman Open, Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yun-Ju and Cheng I-Ching, the no.4 seeds, beat Hong Kong’s Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem, the top seeds (10-12, 11-6, 11-1, 11-5) to claim gold.

Play in Shenzhen concludes on Sunday 2nd June, the men’s singles and women’s singles events being the items on the agenda.
